Who’s
in Control-The Internet or You?
“I
sometimes get up a three or four in the morning and I surf the net.”
“I
often check my e-mail forty times a day.”
“I
seldom spend less than three hours during one session on the net.”
“I
spend more time in chat rooms than with my ‘real-life’ friends.”
Do you know any people like these? They are part
of a new addiction called Internet addiction. According to researchers,
Internet addicts spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. The
use of the Internet can be an addiction like alcoholism or drug use. People
lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.
For example, one college student was missing for
several days. His friends were worried, and they called the police. The police
found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the net- for seven day
straight.
Current studies estimate that about 6 to 10 percent
of Internet users become addicted. And some researchers worry particularly
about young people because the Internet is taking the place of the mall or the
playing field for some of them. The teens spend more time in cyberspace than in
the real world of friends and family. Is “surfing the net” a hobby or an
addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have these symptoms:
·
You
do not go to important family events or you do not do school projects because
you like to spend hours on the Internet.
·
You
can’t wait for your next online session.
·
You’re
determined to spend a brief time online, but then you spend several hours.
·
You
go out with your friends less and less.
What is the
cure? There is counseling to help Internet addicts-even online. Some experts recommend
that people set strict limits on their time for Internet use. You have to
control it. The Internet shouldn’t control you.

Pamela and Diego
How did a girl from Texas meet someone from Argentina?
They
met on a subway in Paris, of course! And the meeting wasn’t during a vacation.
Here’s how it happened.
Pamela Grant grew up on a ranch near Dallas. Pamela loved
to cook, and she used to make elegant meals for her friends. When she finished
high school, she went to France and studied to be a chef.
Diego Fabri was born in Mendoza, Argentina. His family
produced wine after high school, Diego went to France and studied hotel
management.
Diego noticed Pamela when she got the subway train. She
was talking to a friend, and she seemed very happy and energetic. Pamela
noticed Diego. He was handsome, and he seemed interesting.
Pamela said goodbye to her friend and got off. Diego had
to get off at the same stop.
“Why is this man following
me?” she
thought. “I’d like to invite her for a cup of coffee, but I don’t have time
now,” he thought.
Pamela walked into an office. The man followed her in.
“I’m here for a job interview,” Pamela said” Me too,” said Diego.
It was love at first sight. Both Pamela and Diego got the
jobs-in a new hotel on the island of Ibiza, Spain and six months later they
were married. The guests said it was a beautiful wedding.
Ricky Martin
“Un,
Dos, Tre, Maria,” “The
Cup Of Life” Zthe 1998 World Cup theme song), and “Livin’ La Vida Loca” made
Ricky Martin a star in every corner of the world. “Livin’ La Vida Loca” made
history and became the largest-selling single in the history of Columbia
Records, one of the world’s largest recording companies
Ricky Martin was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on
December 24, 1971. He became interested in a career as an entertainer in
elementary school, where he used to act in plays and sing in the choir. As a
small child, he makes television commercials. Later, he took singing lessons,
but at the time, Ricky wasn’t interested in Latin music. His taste was for
David Bowie, Boston, and Cheap Trick.
At the age of ten, Ricky discovered the music of the
Latin group Menudo. Menudo was a group of teenage singers that became the most
popular youthful Latin American group of all time. He wanted to be part of the
group. At first, they said he was too young, but later they called him for an
audition. They wanted to see him perform. He joined the group when he was only
twelve.
For five years, Ricky lived his dream. He performed at
sold-out concerts on every continent. He had to spend long hours in the
recording studio. Ricky said that his school was the hotel room and that the
hotel lobby was his playground.
In 1989, when Menudo was at the peak of its success,
Ricky Martin left the group and moved to New York. He wanted to achieve solo
success, but after a year of frustration, Ricky moved to Mexico. There he began
an acting career in Mexican soap operas. In 1994, he moved to Los Angeles,
where he got a role in an American soap opera called General Hospital.
This got Ricky his first Broadway job in the musical Les Miserables (in
1995). At the same time, he released his album A Medio Vivir that
featured “Maria”. His solo career was now a big success.
Nowadays Ricky Martin is a household name, Latin pop’s
superstar has surprised the public with his English-language albums, and he
continues to sing and act-“Livin’ La Vida Loca.”

Letter
to a friend
April 20
Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand has
certainly been the experience of my life.
Life is busy and hectic. Bangkok is just any
other big city with a population of 10 million and chaotic traffic. I’m very
lucky because my host family lives in a nice quiet area outside the city. There
are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18. Chinda, the daughter, who is 16, and Grandpa
and Grandma.
Mr.
Phairat has an important-export business and travels a lot. Mrs. Phairat works
in the business, too, and she can speak several languages.
I
go to an international school with Sana and Chinda. The school teaches about 10
percent in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I’m picking up the spoken language,
but Thai writing is very difficult. Cooking classes are my favorite. I’m
learning all about Thai food and culture. People don’t use chopsticks here, but
spoons and forks. When I come back, I’m going to cook you guys a genuine Thai
meal.
Last
weekend we drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great, but
Sanan and Chinda say that next month they’re taking me to Phuket Island, where
the beaches are even more beautiful. During vacation, we’re going to travel to
the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two
elephants. The mahouts (handlers) use the animals to pull logs. I’m going to
ride those elephants-and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say it’s really fun.
I’m
fascinated by everything in this country, but especially by the elephants.
Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They have been
a traditional symbol of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In
the seventeenth century, a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle.
I’ll tell you all about my Thai boxing lessons
next time I write.
Love, Mandy

Since When?
Many inventions aren’t as old as you think.
The following inventions are part of people’s
everyday lives,
but they haven’t been around for all that long of
a time. Read about history.
Does any of the information surprise you?
Have you listened to the news
on the radio recently?
Have you talked on your cell
phone?
At
the beginning of the twentieth century, many people didn’t believe that
electromagnetic waves traveled through the air. Gugliemo Marconi proved them
wrong. On December 12, 1901, Marconi tied several antennas to kites. He sent a
signal-the letter S in Morse code-across the Atlantic Ocean, about 2,175 miles
(3,500 kilometers) away. The signal traveled from Poldhu, in Cornwall, England,
to St. John’s, Newfoundland. Since then, the use of waves for communication has
been part of people’s everyday life-in radio, television, and recently in cell
phones.
Have you looked in the
refrigerator recently?
People have tried to keep cool or cool their food for
ages. The Chinese invented ice cream 4,000 years ago, and they used to keep it
in snow in underground chambers. In Baghdad, in the eight century, a king used
to import snow and put it between the walls of his summer home. The snow cooled
the home. In 1834, Jacob Perkins, an American in London, invented a machine to
make ice. The first home refrigerators appeared in the early 1920s, and today
almost every home has one. In the twenty-first century, we can’t live without
it. The average American visits the refrigerator about 45 times a day.
Have you seen any good
programs on TV lately?
Did you ever think of life without television? Well it
hasn’t been around for that many years. In fact, the development of
black-and-white television began in 1926 when John Logie Baird gave the first
demonstration of a television image in London. But those early pictures were
bad. Then Philo Farnsworth got the idea to use a tube with spots of lights for
TV pictures, and about the same time, Vladmir Zworkin invented a good
television camera. The U.S. Company RCA used these improvements and opened an
experimental TV station in 1930. However, the “Golden Era” of television didn’t
begin until the late 1940s. By 1940, there were over a hundred stations on the
air in the United States. Since that time, television has become an important
part of everyday life for people around the world.
How long have you worn your
watch?
Throughout history, people have kept time: the Egyptian
sun clock, the Roman and Greek water clocks, the sand clock, the mechanical
clocks in public places and squares, and the grandfather clock in people’s
homes. The pocket watch appeared in Germany about 1500.
But it was only around 1910 that the Brazilian aviator,
Alberto Santos Dumond, created the first wristwatch. He needed to check flying
time, but he also needed to keep his hands on the controls of his plane. So he
wasn’t able to take his watch out of his pocket. As they say: “Necessity is the
mother of invention.” He put a watch around his wrist! The jewelry maker
Cartier used Dumond’s idea, and since then, people have worn wristwatches of
all colors, shapes, and sizes.

The Magic of Movies
Since
December 28, 1895, there have been movie audiences. That day the Lumiére
brothers showed short films in a café in Paris. The audience screamed when a
train on the film came right toward them. Since then, filmmakers have used
various techniques to amaze audiences. These techniques form the art of special
effects-and create the magic of the movies.
One of the first geniuses of special effects was also a
Frenchman-Georges Meliés. In 1899, he made a movie called The Conjurer.
In it, he disappeared, and then his female assistant disappeared. How was this
possible?
Early moviemakers stopped the camera and then started it
again. In-between time, the person or object or scene in front of the camera
changed. For example, in one of his early films, the inventor Thomas Edison
substituted a dummy for the actress in a film about Mary, Queen of Scots. The
dummy’s head was chopped off to show the queen’s death. When audiences saw the
scene, they gasped in horror. Since then, filmmakers have used techniques like
this to make people see things that didn’t happen in real life in front of the
camera.
Moviemakers today still use another old technique: small
models for large objects. One of the most famous special effects in movie
history was King Kong in a 1933 film. The huge gorilla scared audiences when he
climbed the Empire State Building. But the real King Kong was a model and was
actually only 18 inches high! The moviemakers used the stop-motion technique.
Workers put the model of the gorilla in one position and took a picture. Then
they moved it a tiny bit and took another picture. For one second on the
screen, there were twenty-four pictures of Kong!
Recently, computers have become important in special
effects. In 1996, the movie Toy Story was the first movie made entirely
of computer-generated images and characters. Over 800,000 hours of computer
time went into the final film.
The recent series of Star Wars films has made
extensive use of digital computer images. In fact, in some scenes, 95 percent
of the screen contained images made by computers. And the director George Lucas
even took facial expressions of the actors on film and mixed them together in
different ways with a computer.
The art of filmmaking never stops. What magical effects
will moviemakers use in the future? You’ll see them at the movies!

People Who Made a Big Difference-in a Small Way
Pick up a newspaper, and
you’ll read about charitable organizations that help victims of earthquakes and
wars or about celebrities who make big donations to charity. These are
important, of course. But sometimes the media seem to ignore ordinary people
who help on a smaller scale. Here is the story of two people who helped with
simple ideas.
Mohammed
Yunus
Mohammed Yunus, a professor from
Bangladesh, has helped many people with his bank. When he was working as a
teacher of economics, he thought of a simple concept: micro-credit. The idea is
to lend small amounts of money to the poor. They can use the money to help
themselves. Many use the money to start small business. For example, a widow
might borrow just $30 to $100. She spends the money to by cotton. She then
waves the cotton into cloth and sells the cloth. She earns enough money to make
a living for herself and her family-and enough money to pay back the loan.
Yunus started the Grameen Bank in
the mid-1970s. Since then the bank has loaned out almost a billion dollars, and
it now lends to 1.6 million micro-entrepreneurs. Small amounts of money-with a
big result on the lives of many. And then man who started all this only earns
$240 a month.
Nancy
Lublin
Nancy Lublin was studying to be a
lawyer when one day she received an inheritance that changed her life-and the
life of others. The money was from her great-grand father, and it wasn’t for a
large amount-just $ 5,000. Lublin immediately decided to use the money to help
others. And while she was riding up the elevator to her apartment with the
$5,000 check, she got the idea. She started a program that gave poor women nice
clothes for job interviews.
Nancy Lublin has helped thousands of
people since she opened Dress for Success New York in 1997. In a church
basement, she has set up in racks of clothing-suits, dressed, skirts and
blouses. Individuals, clothing companies, and large stores give Lublin the
clothing. Charitable organizations send poor women who are looking for jobs to
Lublin’s basement. There the women look for clothes that look good on them, and
they wear them on their job interviews. When women get jobs, Dress for Success
gives them another whole new outfit for work. Lublin says that the new clothes
give the women new confidence. She says that she has seen women look at
themselves in their new clothes and say, “Wow, I’m going back to college.”
Again, a small idea with big results.

Tips to International Travelers
Very often people who travel to the United States forget
to tip. It is usual to tip porters, taxi drivers, and waiters. Waiters expect
to get a 15 percent tip on the cost of your meal. Taxi drivers expect about the
same amount.
In Italy and Mexico, all university graduates have a title,
and they usually expect you to use it. Don’t forget to call a lawyer or
graduate dottore in Italy, and in Mexico, call him licenciado.
In England, make sure to stand in line (“queue”) even if
there are only two of you. It’s important to respect lines there. It’s a good
idea to talk about the weather. It’s a favorite subject of conversation with
the British.
In Spain, it’s advisable to have a light snack in the
afternoon if someone invites you for dinner. People eat meals very late, and
restaurants do not generally open until after 9 P.M.
In Arab countries, men kiss one another on the cheek.
Your host may welcome you with a kiss on both cheeks. It is polite to do the
same.
In Japan, be prepared to exchange personal or business
cards. When a person gives you a card, don’t put it into your pocket right
away. The person expects you to read it and even to comment on it. It is
impolite not to do so.
In most Asian countries, people do not touch or show any
sign of affection in public. For example, remember not to pat a child on the
head to show your affection or appreciation.
Don’t forget to be careful of your hand gestures or other
body language to express something in conversation. A gesture that is
acceptable in one culture may be offensive in another.

When In Rome, Do As The Romans Do
The following are some points that you should try to
think about when you visit the United States.
Hugging, Kissing, and Keeping
a Distance
In
Latin America, it is a common for male and female friends to kiss one another
on the cheek. In Brazil, people kiss one another twice or even three times,
especially if they are young and unmarried. In general, people from Latin
cultures like to touch and hug on another. The same does not occur in the
United States. Americans might kiss family members, and they usually shake
hands when they first meet people. But in general, they like to keep their
distance. The acceptable distance is approximately 16 inches (40 centimeters).
Eye Contact
In some Asian countries, when you look someone in the
eye, this may be a sign of lack of respect. In the United States, it is polite
to make eye contact when you are talking to someone.
On a First-Name Basis
In the United States, it is common for new friends and
work colleagues to call each other by their first names. This isn’t a sign of
disrespect in any way. If you want to be more formal, use Mr., Mrs., or Ms. So
and So, but never Mr. Bob, Mrs. Mary, or Ms. Ann.
Invitations
Most of the business entertainment takes place in
restaurants. It is not very common for Americans to bring business into their
homes. When they get to know you, and you become friends, they might invite you
and your family for a meal in their house. This does not mean that you can take
your entire family and friends with you. In Latin America, a couple of extra guests
are usually welcome. And don’t take “come and see us some time” literally. It
actually means “keep in touch.”
Punctuality
Americans are not tolerant of lateness, particularly for
business meetings and only a little less for social occasions. In some
countries, it is fashionable to be late, and excuses to schedule your departure
for meetings earlier.
Noise
People of Latin cultures like to talk-and talk loudly. It
is acceptable to sing “Happy Birthday” to someone in a U.S. restaurant. But it
is not advisable to start singing your favorite songs at the top of your voice.
